How PA Turnpike Tolls Work?
Your result shows two prices side by side. The green number is your E-ZPass toll. The red number is your Toll By Plate toll.
E-ZPass always costs less on the same trip. The tool also shows your trip distance and your dollar savings. Longer trips and larger vehicles raise both prices, but the 50% gap stays the same.
Switch between “By interchange” and “By distance” to match how you plan. Use interchange mode for mainline trips, and distance mode for the Northeast Extension or any mileage you already know.

The PA Turnpike sets your toll from three things. Each one changes the price.
- Distance. You pay for the miles between your entry and exit points.
- Vehicle type. More axles mean a higher toll. A tractor-trailer pays several times a car's rate.
- Payment method. E-ZPass costs about half of Toll By Plate on the same trip.
As of the January 2026 increase, a common passenger trip costs $1.94 with E-ZPass and $3.88 with Toll By Plate. The per-mile rate for a car sits near $0.073. Prices rose 4% in January 2026, and the Commission updates them each year.
Why E-ZPass Costs Less?
E-ZPass reads a transponder as you drive and charges your account instantly. Toll By Plate photographs your license plate and mails an invoice. That camera work, printing, and mailing cost more, so the Commission prices Toll By Plate higher.
The savings repeat at every toll point. A driver crossing the state pays roughly double without a transponder. One or two trips cover the cost of getting an E-ZPass.
How All-Electronic Tolling Changed the Turnpike?
The PA Turnpike removed cash toll booths in 2020. Every toll now runs through E-ZPass or Toll By Plate. Overhead gantries charge your tag at highway speed, so you never stop.
